Sistersong’s Statement on the 2024 Presidential Elections
“The re-election of President Trump is deeply alarming as he has already shown us who he is. President-elect Trump based his campaign and previous term in office on fear, hate and rolling back rights that Americans have held dear. Nationwide, we have already seen the deadly impact that abortion bans have had in cutting short the lives of Amber Nicole Thurman, Candi Miller, Josseli Barnica, Nevaeh Crain, and others we have yet to name. Despite claiming that he is not tied to the dangerous policies in Project 2025, we know that this is the extremists’ playbook and is a direct and immediate threat to our democracy, reproductive freedom, and lives.
But while we are disappointed in the election results, we know we must double down in our commitment to Reproductive Justice. For the next four years, we must focus on how to stay alive, keep our people safe, and invest in our organizations and community. Since America’s inception, Black women have never backed down from any oppressors. This time is no different. We must Trust Black Women to build an intersectional movement where we go beyond restoring the federal right to abortion but achieve a future where everyone has the human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities.
We encourage everyone who woke up fearful for their rights under a Trump presidency to consider this moment their call to action. We must commit to rejecting sexism, racism, transphobia, and other expressions of bigotry and white supremacy–despite the disappointment that we feel today. We must keep organizing until the principles of Reproductive Justice become reality.”
